Judy Steele, FCPA, FCA

President and Chief Operating Officer

Judy was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Emera Energy in October 2012. She served as Chief Financial Officer of Emera Inc. from May 2011 to April 2012 and prior to that held the position of Vice President, Finance, of Emera Energy.

Before joining Emera Energy, Judy worked in a variety of capacities across Emera's business including Investor and External Relations, Strategy Development and Regulatory Affairs. Prior to joining Emera in 1999, she worked in the accounting and auditing consulting practices of Ernst & Young. Judy is a Chartered Accountant and in 2005 was awarded her profession's highest honour, the designation Fellow Chartered Accountant.

Known for her community leadership, Judy has served as Treasurer of the 2011 Canada Winter Games, is a former Director of the Halifax Port Authority and was National Chair of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In 2003, she received the "CA of the Year Award" in recognition of her outstanding contributions in this regard.

Paul Laberge

Executive Vice President, Legal, Regulatory and Public Affairs

Paul joined Emera Energy as Executive Vice President, Legal, Regulatory and Public Affairs in August 2016. 

Prior to his current role, Paul was Senior Counsel, Special Projects for Emera Inc. since 2013 where he led the legal and regulatory due diligence and legal aspects of the regulatory approval process for the acquisition of TECO Energy. He was also legal lead on a number of greenfield development projects and led the tidal energy and floating wind development teams.

Paul brings over 20 years of legal, business development and executive management experience. After practicing law in the Toronto office of a national law firm, he joined Alliance Atlantis Communications where he served in a variety of increasingly senior roles culminating in Executive VP, Corporate Development & General Counsel for the motion picture distribution division. He also co-founded Magellan Fuel Solutions, a business he co-developed from concept to successful commercial product launch and sale. 

Paul is a graduate of the law school at Western University and also has a MBA and science degree from McMaster University. He is a director of Neptune Theatre and an advisory board member for Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic Region.

Dave Bezanson

Vice President, Commercial Operations

After originally joining the company in August 2014 as Vice President of Finance, Dave was appointed Vice President, Commercial Operations at Emera Energy in August 2016. He is responsible for the company’s asset management, gas scheduling and power desk activities, as well as coordination of Emera Energy’s strategic initiatives.

With more than 20 years of accounting and financial reporting experience, Dave has developed a broad understanding of the business and built a solid foundation of commercial knowledge. He has a proven sense of commercial acumen, strong leadership skills as well as efficiency and effectiveness in improving controls and process.

In his previous role with parent company Emera Inc., Dave held the role of Vice President, Corporate Controller where he was closely engaged in many complex accounting and reporting issues related to Emera and Emera Energy. Prior to joining the Emera group of companies, he worked predominately in the accounting and auditing practice of KPMG in Halifax.

Dave is a member of Chartered Professional Accountants of Nova Scotia and is currently serving as President of the Atlantic chapter of Finance Executives International. He is passionate about community involvement and has served in volunteer leadership roles with Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia, Nova Knowledge, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and Teichert Gallery.

Mark Christie

Mark Christie

Vice President, Marketing and Trading 

Mark has been with Emera Energy since its inception in 2002, taking on progressively more senior positions within the Marketing and Trading group culminating with his Oct 2014 promotion to Vice President, Marketing and Trading. He is responsible for all aspects of Emera Energy’s physical and financial natural gas and power marketing and trading activities.

Mark has over 15 years of experience in both trading and sales across a variety of commodity markets, including foreign exchange and interest rates in addition to North American physical and financial natural gas and power. Mark has been instrumental in the establishment, development and growth of Emera Energy’s Marketing and Trading business, bringing a commercial acumen,  an extensive knowledge of the physical natural gas market, and dedication to Emera Energy's client base.

Mark is a graduate of Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is an active supporter of various community initiatives in his hometown of Dartmouth.

Sandi Hennequin

Vice President, U.S. Public Affairs

Sandi joined Emera Energy in May 2015 as Vice President, U.S. Public Affairs bringing two decades of public policy, strategic communication and market experience in U.S. energy markets. Sandi serves as the government affairs, public relations and communications liaison for Emera Energy in the Northeast United States.

Prior to joining Emera, Sandi served as the Vice President for the New England Power Generators Association, with responsibility for directing NEPGA’s legislative and educational strategies in New England and as Vice President for Energy Policy in New England for Constellation Energy, representing Constellation’s commercial interests before New England legislative and regulatory bodies, and within the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) stakeholder process. She also has a breadth of energy consulting experience focused on development of competitive energy markets in the Northeastern U.S.

Sandi is a graduate of the George Washington University in Washington, DC and holds a Masters of Public Administration from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She is very active in her community recently joining the Board of Directors of the Seacoast Mental Health Center. She has also served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Prescott Park Arts Festival, chaired the Families First Event Committee and was appointed to the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Sustainable Practices in her town of Portsmouth, NH. In 2007, Sandi was recognized as one of the Forty under 40 Leaders in New Hampshire.

Ian Johnston

Vice President, Origination 

Ian has been with Emera Energy since April 2002, taking on various commercial roles with the latest position, Vice President of Gas and Power Origination effective October 2014. He has been instrumental in growing EE’s  natural gas business. 

Ian has over 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, including natural gas and crude oil trading, natural gas marketing and production/exploitation engineering.

Ian moved to Nova Scotia from Alberta where he previously worked for Nexen Energy Marketing, CXY Energy Marketing, Wascana Energy Marketing, and Amoco Canada Petroleum Co. Ltd.

Ian is a Professional Engineer, having graduated with a BASC in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto. Ian hails from southern Ontario.

Dave Pickles

Dave Pickles

Vice President, Operations 

Dave joined Emera Energy in July 2015 as Vice President of Operations, bringing 20 years of heavy industry, engineering and management experience.

Dave has been with Emera since 2001 and has extensive experience in electricity generation. His key areas of focus will be operational excellence and maximizing the value of Emera Energy’s generation assets in Canada and the USA, as well as assisting with the evaluation of future asset acquisition decisions.

Before joining Emera Energy, Dave was Sr. Director of Plant Operations with Emera affiliate company Nova Scotia Power (NS Power). He has also been Plant Manager at NS Power’s Point Aconi and Tufts Cove generating stations. Nova Scotia Power’s diverse generating portfolio has provided Dave with a broad level of generating experience, including wind, biomass, hydro, natural gas, heavy fuel oil and coal / petroleum coke.

Dave is a Professional Engineer (Chemical), and an alumnus of both the University College of Cape Breton and the Technical University of Nova Scotia (Dalhousie).
